Single-use packaging isn't going anywhere on its own.
Every day in Australia, millions of takeaway containers are used once and thrown away. Whether it’s plastic, compostable or “recyclable”, the constant production and disposal creates a long chain of wasted resources and a very short useful life.
Reuse has always been the answer. The challenge has always been making it easy enough that people actually do it.
Events are one of the best places to start. The food is served here, the people are here, the collection point is here. It's a closed loop, and closed loops make reuse work. One event running reusable containers instead of single-use can divert hundreds of pieces of packaging from the bin.
That's what we're here for.
We've been working on this problem for a while.
Devolver started as a borrow-and-return container system for takeaway cafes on Sydney's Northern Beaches. The idea was simple: like a library, but for your lunch container.
We learned a lot. Behaviour change is hard, and convenience is a powerful competitor. The original system is winding down, but everything we learned is shaping what we do next.
