Key Learnings from Our Freshwater Pilot: Paving the Way for a Reusables Revolution
As we navigate the journey towards a circular future, our Freshwater pilot as part of the Boomerang Labs Accelerator Program in Collaboration with the NSW EPA has provided invaluable insights into the dynamics of consumer behavior and the operational intricacies of implementing a reusables system. Here’s a look at the key takeaways from the first part of our community pilot, which have shown us what works best in getting people on board and making the system run smoothly.
1. The Power of Well-Trained, Motivated Staff
One of the biggest takeaways from our pilot is just how important well-trained and motivated staff are. When teams understand the initiative, are excited and well-prepped, customers feel the vibe and get on board. Something as simple as displaying signage prominently makes a difference and a small nudge at time of order even more so!
2. The Importance of Targeted Awareness Campaigns
Awareness is crucial for the success of any sustainability initiative. Our pilot highlighted the need for targeted awareness campaigns that resonate with the local community. These campaigns should emphasise the environmental benefits of reusables, the simplicity of the system, and the collective impact of individual actions. By connecting with people on their values and in their everyday lives, we can drive greater participation.
3. Incentives to Encourage Initial Participation Weren’t as Effective as Expected
Incentives play a big role in getting customers to take that first step towards using reusables (but it's not a lasting motivator.) A little promo or discount can nudge customers to give reusables a try but the users who tried devolver for other reasons were the ones who kept coming back.
4. Continuous Improvement
Customer experience is everything, and continuously improving our technology and processes is key. We’re currently working on making our app and POS materials even better, ensuring that the process of borrowing and returning containers is as seamless as possible. By focusing on user-friendly design and robust functionality, we aim to eliminate any hiccups and ensure a smooth experience for both customers and retailers.
Moving Forward with Confidence
The Freshwater pilot has given us some incredible insights and reinforced the importance of community collaboration, effective communication, and ongoing innovation. Now it's time to iterate and improve for better results! As we gear up for the next phase, we’re more confident than ever in the potential of our reuse system to have a significant positive impact.
We can’t wait to continue working with our existing cafes and collaborate with new partners to bring the benefits of reusables to more communities. Onwards and upwards in the charge towards cleaner, greener takeaway.
Stay tuned for more updates and join us in this exciting movement!
